Why do I need a MuseScore Pro+ subscription to download copyrighted works?
MuseScore.com hosts copyrighted works from publishers who require licensing agreements to be in place before their works can be distributed online. The subscription fee helps cover this licensing cost.
Are Public Domain works available for free?
Yes, all public domain works are available for free on MuseScore.com.
I used to be able to download scores for free, why did this change?
The MuseScore team is committed to respecting copyright laws and protecting the intellectual property of composers, songwriters and publishers. We have since implemented licensing agreements with publishers that require a subscription for access to certain copyrighted works.
Thanks to these agreements, you are able to download copyrighted works — and composers are paid for creating the music we all enjoy!
What are my legal rights when I share an original MuseScore 4 composition on MuseScore.com?
When you upload an original score to MuseScore 4, you have a variety of publishing options available to you:
All Right Reserved: Preserve all the rights to your work. It cannot be used by others.
Creative Commons (CC): Your work can be used and re-worked by others, as long as you are publicly credited. A variety of CC publishing options are available, including a clause that your work can not be used for commercial purposes.
Public Domain: Your creations can be used by anyone in any way.
Please note: Once your work has been published under Creative Commons or in the Public Domain, the licence cannot be revoked.
One of my compositions has been uploaded to MuseScore.com without my permission. What can I do?

What is Copyright Documentation?
Copyright Documentation is a service intended to help establish proof of creation of your original musical works and arrangements.
When you upload a musical score, we insert a mention on your score of your upload date and identity, which could be valuable in helping to establish your rights as a creator.
Who can use Copyright Documentation?
This service is available to creators of:
• Original musical compositions
• Original arrangements of public domain works
What does Copyright Documentation include?
• A footer added to your score with the © symbol, your username, and the upload date
• A record of upload timestamp and identity
What doesn't Copyright Documentation include?
• Rights enforcement
• Revenue collection services
• Legal representation
• Involvement in copyright disputes or litigation
• Application filings and registrations with government copyright offices
Do I need Copyright Documentation to have copyright over my work?
No - your work is automatically protected by copyright law from the moment of creation.
However, our service provides documentation that can be used to support the date on which you purport to have created the work, which could be valuable if you ever need to demonstrate your ownership.
How is this different from registering with my country's copyright office?
Our service provides timestamped proof of upload, but it is not a substitute for official copyright registration.
While your work is protected by copyright law from the moment of creation, some jurisdictions require official registration before you can file an infringement lawsuit.
What happens if someone infringes my copyright?
While our service provides proof of your upload date, we do not provide enforcement services.
You would need to pursue any copyright disputes through appropriate legal channels.
Can I use this service for collaborative work?
Yes, but please ensure all collaborators are aware and in agreement. The footer generated by the Copyright Documentation service will include only the account holder's username.
Is my existing copyright documentation affected if I cancel my subscription?
No - all certificates and documentation issued while your subscription was active remain valid proof of your upload date.
